Week In Review and Best of the Week

Hi everyone! Looking back, its been a busier week than I expected it would be.

A few reviews:

Contests:

Now for the best of the week!

I read some really good books this past week from very different genres (religious and science fiction), so I can't pick a favorite out of them. However! The cover of So Shines the Night makes me keep looking at it....

REVIEW: Star Trek: The Stuff of Dreams by James Swallow

Title: Star Trek: The Stuff of Dreams
Series: Star Trek The Next Generation Universe
Author: James Swallow
Published Date: Marh 25, 2013
Publisher: Pocket Books
Format: ebook
Pages: 132
ISBN: 1451696612

Rating: 4 1/2 stars

Synopsis: The Enterprise-E arrives in unclaimed space for a rendezvous with the Starfleet science vessel Newton. Jean-Luc Picard and his crew have been ordered to assist the Newton with the final phase of its current mission—a mission that brings Picard face to face with something he never thought he would see again: the phenomenon known as the Nexus. Less than twelve years after it left the Alpha Quadrant, the Nexus ribbon has now returned. Tasked to track and study the phenomenon as it re-entered the galaxy, the specialist science team on the Newton discovered that the orbital path of the Nexus has been radically altered by the actions of the rogue El-Aurian Tolian Soren—taking it deep into the territory of The Holy Order of the Kinshaya, one of the key members of the Typhon Pact. Starfleet Command is unwilling to allow the Kinshaya—and by extension, the Typhon Pact—free access to what is essentially a gateway to anywhere and anywhen, as a single operative could use the Nexus to change the course of galactic history….

My Review: I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for review.
Its been awhile since I've read anything from the Star Trek universe, as much as I consider myself a closet Trekkie (not quite so closet to some of my friends). This was the perfect quick read to get my Trek fix in, since I haven't been able to go back lately and chill to the old episodes of Enterprise.
The author does a great job of adding a little to the Star Trek universe, while keeping to the skeleton of the Star Trek: The Next Generation that we all know and love. Jean-Luc is in there, along with Worf, Beverly Crusher and Geordi LaForge. William Riker, Deanna Troi, Guinan and Data are all given passing mentions.
The story is short, it is a novella in length, and it was just perfect enough to read in a day even with my busy schedule. The storyline wasn't overly complicated, and just short enough to be almost like an episode of the show.
Basically reading the book was like bringing in an old security blanket in for awhile, and enjoying the comfort of an old friend. I would love to read more.

Q: Tell us about the most emotional scene you've ever read in a book - and how did you react?

I was just telling my 7 year old about this book that I read in middle school. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. The little brother in it, Charles Wallace gets taken into this society where everything is the same, there's no individuality, and Meg, the heroine of the book is trying to save him. She realizes that the only way to save him and destroy the central power's hold over Charles Wallace is through love.

She could love Charles Wallace. Charles. Charles, I love you. My baby brother who always takes care of me. Come back to me, Charles Wallace, come away ...
I think I cried every time I got to that scene. What about you? What was your most emotional scene?

BLAST and GIVEAWAY: A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest

A Scholar's Journey The Divine TempestA Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest

A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra. Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world. The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl's trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity. Purchase A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest on Amazon.

Synopsis: Daria's new home in Ephesus with Lucas both beguiles and confounds her, until she meets followers of The Way.
Her past has taught her that evil is real, that it can consume a person. She saw it happen with her husband, before he took his own life. Widowed, with no family, Daria becomes a tutor to Lucas, a rich traveling merchant from Ephesus. There she discovers evil has a strong foothold and that Lucas himself seems drawn to evil and sorcery.
As her relationship with her employer grows, she fears that she will be unable to pull him to pull him from demonic influence. Tension in the city is about to erupt, as a new sect called The Way continues to draw followers. A man called Paul leads the movement against the economic and political strength of the city, found in its goddess cult.
When she learns more of the ways of the Christians and their ability to defeat evil, she begins to have hope. But then Lucas is arrested and jailed for a brutal crime, and it seems not even the Christians can help.
Tensions escalate in the city until thousands are pouring into the arena to protest the influence of the Christians, and a plot to kill Paul is underway. When Lucas's execution is scheduled, Daria must find a way to prove his innocence, save his life, and help her new friends before everyone she loves is destroyed.

My Review: I'd like to thank Book Sneeze and Thomas Nelson Publishing for allowing me a copy of this book for review.
I've heard only good things about some of Tracy Higley's books and I was really looking forward to reading this book. I was interested in how she introduced the early history of the Christian church and some of its leaders, like Paul and Timothy.
I have to say, this was a pleasant surprise. The author does such a great job of describing the world around you that the reader truly feels like they are a part of the experience. Early Ephesus really came to life for me, and Paul was given a life and personality that I never could have imagined on my own. I definitely enjoyed this book, and would like to read it again.

In battling new enemies and finding new friends, Jess’s confidence finds room to grow, but who will she lose along the way?

My Review: I'd like to thank I Luv Tours and the author for providing me with a copy for review.
This was a good book. It was easy and quick to read. The story line was enjoyable. I'm not quite sure though at the end if the Daniel/Eva threads were completely wrapped up in a tidy package enough for me to let them go yet or not.
The biggest complaint that I have about this book (which is why I gave it 3 1/2 stars instead of 4) is that the end of the first book and the beginning of the second book didn't mesh well. It was so confusing that I had to go back and read the last chapter of the first book to try to get a feel of where the second book was starting from. I was still confused, and it took me a few chapters of the second book to get back into the rhythm of the book again.

My Review: I'd like to thank the author and Innovative Online Book Tours for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't too pleased with the first book, though I gave it a good review based on the writing style, action and characters. I'm going to do the same here, although, the author did cut back a lot on the sexual scenes.
The writing is phenomenal. The author really knows how to write well. The characters are enjoyable. The plot twist in the beginning was unexpected. I like how Natasha was able to learn her gift more and utilize it more as well in this book.
The action was non-stop in the book, and it really helped buoy up the book, since I didn't really like some of the other scenes. Overall, its a great book, and I hope I can read the next one in the series.

Phantom by Laura DeLuca Tour And Giveaway!

Join us March 25-29th for a great tour for Phantom by: Laura DeLuca.

Book Description

March 30, 2012
The "Phantom" was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses "Phantom" as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card. Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars-Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist. Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn't know who to trust, but she knows she's running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

Another week has come and gone.....way too quickly for my liking, though I'm looking forward to spring! My tulips and hyacinths are finally popping through the frozen ground, and I am so eager to see them bloom.

I have had a few books on my shelf, and as soon as I think I've gotten a handle on my TBR list, another few books come piling on in. Not that I'm complaining, mind you!

So this week's grouping is:

I'm hoping I can get at least two of these read this week.

Week In Review and Best of the Week

First I want to say to everyone I am so sorry for slacking this week! I worked a 12 hour on Tuesday and working this weekend, and its thrown me completely off kilter.

So I've had only two reviews:

  1. Water Witch by Juliet Dark
  2. The Guilty Innocent by DN Simmons
And only three giveaways....
For the best of the week, there wasn't much to pull from but, I'll say that the cover for both books was visually stunning in their own ways.
This cover kinda reminds me of a Monet painting in the background.

And the black and bright blue are just amazing on this cover.

Lola JamesAbout the author:

Lola James has been reading romance novels since her teens, and fell in love with the paranormal after discovering Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Her love of the dark worlds of vampires and witches, as well as her fascination with Greek mythology led her to create the Spellbound Series, an ongoing Paranormal Romance combining all of the above into tales of suspense with a little bit of humor in an Urban Fantasy setting. A long time lover of reading and writing with a passion for a great story, James became discouraged by the complicated and arbitrary publishing process, James had initially set down her laptop and her hopes of being a writer. However, with the purchase of her first e-reader, James became re-energized by the new possibilities for an undiscovered author to reach the masses. Dusting off her keyboard she finally finished Bound to Remember, the first book of the Spellbound Series and self-published it. Energized and ambitious, James is now hard at work on both the Spellbound Series as well as the Fate Series, a paranormal romance about dreams and what happens if they come true.

REVIEW: Water Witch by Juliet Dark

Title: The Water Witch
Series: Fairwick Chronicles #2

Format: ebook
Pages: 352

Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis: After casting out a dark spirit, Callie McFay, a professor of gothic literature, has at last restored a semblance of calm to her rambling Victorian house. But in the nearby thicket of the Honeysuckle Forest, and in the currents of the rushing Undine River, more trouble is stirring. . . .
The enchanted town of Fairwick’s dazzling mix of mythical creatures has come under siege from the Grove: a sinister group of witches determined to banish the fey back to their ancestral land. With factions turning on one another, all are cruelly forced to take sides. Callie’s grandmother, a prominent Grove member, demands her granddaughter’s compliance, but half-witch/half-fey Callie can hardly betray her friends and colleagues at the college.
To stave off disaster, Callie enlists Duncan Laird, an alluring seductive academic who cultivates her vast magical potential, but to what end? Deeply conflicted, Callie struggles to save her beloved Fairwick, dangerously pushing her extraordinary powers to the limit—risking all, even the needs of her own passionate heart.

My Review: I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book to read for review.
I was truly expecting this book to take me a few days to read. While I really enjoyed the first book (my review of Demon Lover), it took me a few days to read probably because it was so long. From the first page, I was completely enamored and drawn into the book. Callie is still fighting her heart and the ties she has to her incubus.
There were two things I didn't like in the book: first, there was a small time discrepancy where the author mentions that Callie had broken up with her long-standing boyfriend the summer before, when they had actually broken up on Christmas. I would think the author would remember that, but that's a quick edit. The second thing I didn't like was the fact that Callie is basically a little slut. She just banished her incubus, she keeps whining about how connected they are (keeps having dreams about having sex with him), and yet, she jumps after the two men who are set in front of her. Obviously, they can't be that connected.
While all that is going on, I did enjoy how she's setting down roots in Fairwick, and she eventually chooses between her grandmother's group and the Fairwick group. The action was well-paced, and the writing was good. I can;t wait for the next book!

Week In Review and Best of the Week

So its been a busy week here. I got the promotion I went for! Yay me! This week has been a very busy time for me, doing my old job, and trying to learn my new. There are only so many hours during the work day, right?

I had a few reviews:

  1. The Chronicles of Trellah: Perpetual Rain by T.S. Graham
  2. Witchblood by Emma Mills
  3. Seduced by Pain by Kimberly Kinrade
  4. Desires Unleashed by D.N. Simmons
One cover reveal and 2 excerpts:
  1. Firewall by C.G. Powell
  2. Crimson Flames by Ashley Robertson
A few giveaways:
  1. Morrigan by Laura Deluca (great author!): $50 Gift Card, Kindle Paperwhite, signed book in print, 3 ebook copies
  2. Return to Nim's Island: a copy of the DVD

Best of the Week is a feature co-hosted by Roxanne from Story Envy and Emilee from Fantastical Adventures through the Paper Realm
It's basically to rant, rave, and fangirl/geek-out about all things bookish we've encountered over the last week!

Reading this week didn't make me come across any particularly awesome quotes. The covers weren't all that jaw dropping either, but the one for Firewall by C.G. Powell looks pretty cool.

REVIEW: Desires Unleashed by DN Simmons

Title: Desires Unleashed
Series: Knights of the Darkness #1
Author: D.N. Simmons
Published Date: Jan 5, 2011
Publisher: self-published by author
Format: ebook
Pages: 294
ISBN13: 294001252285
Copy provided by: Innovative Online Book Tours
Genre: Paranormal LGBT romance
Add to: Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon
Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis:Enter the sexually and violently charged world of the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles, where humans and the supernatural live together in a tenuous co-existence, where neither side trusts the other. Desires are Unleashed in this novel as darkness blankets the city, giving cloak to an unknown terror who stalks the night searching for human victims. The government funded special police force (Supernatural Unit Investigation Team) better known as the S.U.I.T., has assigned two detectives to track down this mysterious threat. The detectives soon discover that this threat may be more than they can handle and they seek outside help from two unlikely candidates. Can the combined forces of four beings be enough to triumph in a deadly race against time? Original, sexy and gritty, the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles will suck you in and take you for a ride you won't forget!

My Review: I'd like to thank the author and Innovative Online Book Tours for allowing me a copy of this book to read in exchange for a review, in anticipation of the next book.
I learned one thing while reading this book....this is the first and close to the last LGBT book (I did promise to read the next in the series) I'll be reading. Its just not my cuppa tea. However, I'm still giving this a good review because I like the writing. I like the world, and I like the characters. I didn't mind the violence, but I didn't like the sexual action between guys. I am definitely not prudish, nor homophobic. I accept and respect love in all forms, but it did nothing for me.
I enjoyed the building up of Natasha as a character the most, and liked the partnership between Matthew and Warren. Darian seemed a little typical of a vampire, so he was just so-so for me. Most especially, as a paranormal reader, I loved how the author expanded past the typical were wolves into other forms of were creatures.

Q: Activity! Hopefully warm weather for most of us is here soon…so tell us about your favorite outdoor reading spot. Or take a picture.

My backyard is still winter-ready, not spring or summer ready so I sure as heck am not taking a picture of it. I wish I could say that my backyard was my favorite outdoor reading spot, but its not. I don't have one, since I rarely really get to read outside. Usually the kids take up most my time when I'm outside or the neighbors want to talk, even if I take my Nook out with me. (Don't they get that when I have my nose in a book or my nook not to disturb me?)

What's your favorite outdoor spot?

Firewall Cover Reveal and Excerpt

Firewall (book 2 No Uncertain Logic Series) by C.G. Powell
“I hate to cut things short, but the sooner we get down to business the better. I’ve made
arrangements for a transport to take us to the Atlantis which is sitting in the Meranna Sea.”
Before Sarik could finish, Jael interrupted, “When did you move the ship?”
“Shortly after you left for Ibis Prime. Orion felt he needed to keep an eye on me once
Aphrodite arrived, so he sent a team to assist the move closer to the capital city.” He looked to
Neria and Aphrodite. “Ladies, if you will follow me. I will take you to the transport.”
They walked to a smaller docking area where a transporter ship was awaiting them.
Neria’s bags were already on board, as was Captain Ross.
Sarik raised one brow. “How did you get here so quick?”
Captain Ross cleared his throat and rolled his eyes towards the cockpit where Tal sat.
“I thought you didn’t trust mist traveling?” Sarik laughed.
“It took a while to get used to, but it has its benefits if you can get past the nausea and the
whole cellular disintegration reassembly thing.”
Sarik nudged the captain with his elbow. “Are you sure it has nothing to do with
quantum entanglement with a certain Jinn?”
Speechless, Captain Ross’ reddened face spoke volumes. He excused himself and joined
Tal in the cockpit.
Looping her arm in Sarik’s, Jael frowned and continued towards the passenger area of the
transport. “Why do you tease the poor Captain? I think it quaint that he has taken a liking to Tal
even if she doesn’t return his affections.”
“What kind of friend would I be, if I didn’t acknowledge his obvious fondness?”
“Do you really want me entertain your question with an answer?”
“No, not really.”
Over the intercom the captain’s voice boomed, “Good morning, this is your captain.
Today’s flight should be a clear shot to the Meranna Sea area. We have favorable atmospheric
conditions and low level winds upon approach. Our estimated arrival is 14:80 standard atomic
time, that’s half-past lunch for those of you who still struggle with the local atomic conversion.”
Jael, Salima, and Aphrodite all turned and looked at Sarik.
Pursed lipped, Sarik stood and yelled toward the cockpit. “Okay, you win. Now get us
the hell out of here.”
