Synopsis: Since accepting a teaching position at remote Fairwick College in upstate New York, Callie McFay has experienced the same disturbingly erotic dream every night: A mist enters her bedroom, then takes the shape of a virile, seductive stranger who proceeds to ravish her in the most toe-curling, wholly satisfying ways possible. Perhaps these dreams are the result of her having written the bestselling book The Sex Lives of Demon Lovers. Callie’s lifelong passion is the intersection of lurid fairy tales and Gothic literature—which is why she’s found herself at Fairwick’s renowned folklore department, living in a once-stately Victorian house that, at first sight, seemed to call her name.
But Callie soon realizes that her dreams are alarmingly real. She has a demon lover—an incubus—and he will seduce her, pleasure her, and eventually suck the very life from her. Then Callie makes another startling discovery: Her incubus is not the only mythical creature in Fairwick. As the tenured witches of the college and the resident fairies in the surrounding woods prepare to cast out the demon, Callie must accomplish something infinitely more difficult—banishing this supernatural lover from her heart.
My Review: I'd like to thank NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
At one point, I swore up and down that the author was from New Orleans, or had an obsession with New Orleans because of two very vague, left-field sentences in the entire book. One of them wasn't quite vague, but unless you had gone through it, you wouldn't really get the true reference. The second one had me scratching my head and running to my computer, insisting that she had to be a NOLA native (Drew Brees, anyone?). Everything I've read about her though suggests otherwise. However, I am convinced she is a sports fan.
Anyone who has read this blog has found out that I am a New Orleans, LA (otherwise known as NOLA) native. Born and bred and quite proud of my Southern heritage, and if there is a good reference to New Orleans in a book I'm reading, it usually gets a a slightly better opinion from me. What can I say? I'm homesick.
But, back to the book. I found this to be, while rather long (400+ pages), it was a book that was easy to read and enjoyable. I got an average of about 100 pages read a day while reading it, and I found myself looking forward to reading more. I can;t wait to read the sequel.
I feel bad for Callie, while she may be finding out things about herself, she's also thrown about into a world for paranormal that I'm not sure she is quite ready for. Her heart certainly isn't ready for it, and it causes much heartbreak towards the end. I'm glad certain characters made it through, and am looking forward to seeing how she progresses through the series.
