EXCERPT:

On the counter was a fruit bowl I recognized and the memory of it jerked the breath from me.James made it in a pottery class, one of his lesser talents. He was a brilliant illustrator and designer but when it came to three dimensional work his skills fell apart. And yet, here, on Hugh's counter, was one of those lopsided creations, the glaze glistening deep blue in the sunlight. As I reached out to touch it I saw a photograph on the wall. Framed in dark wood James, Hugh, and I smiled at the camera. The rough Atlantic crashing behind us, our hair wet and sandy. I could almost smell the sunscreen on our skin and the beer on our breath. My smile was so big that my eyes were practically closed. Long hair, bright blonde in the sea sunshine, hung past my breasts. James's arm was flung lazily across my shoulders and he caught the camera with his gray eyes, holding its gaze, unafraid, happy, alive.I turned back to Hugh and he looked at me, smiling. How did he even recognize me? My hair, shoulder length with long bangs, fell only to my shoulders and was died with henna to a deep copper. The scar under my left eye puckered pink. The line of tissue which ran above my eyebrow was covered by the bangs that drifted into my gray eyes, so much colder than they used to be. My body was taught and balanced, always on edge ready for a fight, sculpted for protection. The difference between me and the girl in that picture seemed unfathomably vast. Almost as if it was impossible we'd ever been the same. How much had Hugh changed? I thought of the crime scene photos I'd looked at with Mulberry on the flight. The close-ups of blood splattered across pinstripe bed sheets. Lawrence Taggert's ripped fingernails. The way his suit jacket floated around him as he lay face down, trapped between the roots of an everglade apple tree. Did Hugh knock him out? Lock the man in his trunk? Ignore his pleas for mercy and incessant banging while he drove to the swamp? Where Hugh then pushed Lawrence to his knees and shot him between the eyes? Finally kicking his corpse into the water for the gators to eat?

fierce creatures tour banner

Fragile Creatures

fragile creatures
Seventeen-year-old Evangeline Frost had a great life, until the car accident that killed her father and turned her mother into a bitter alcoholic. Unable to bear the guilt, Evangeline attempts to take her own life, saved only by the memory of her beloved father. Left with no other options, Evangeline is enrolled in a program for troubled teens at Kindred Hides Wildlife Preserve. There she meets Caster, a keeper as annoying as he is caring; Jett and Lettie, who treat her more like a daughter than troubled teen; and Ruke, a prized giraffe in mourning for his lost mate. Immersed in the preserve with her new friends, Evangeline finally begins to heal. But the haunting memories of the accident and her mother’s unforgiving words threaten to destroy her progress. Only her new friends and their unconditional support, along with her own special connection with Ruke, can save her. Evangeline must learn that there is redemption for her father’s death, and that the bonds between human, animal, and life are not as fragile as she once thought.

RATING: 5 stars

REVIEW: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It has been awhile since a book has truly made me cry, but this one did. And while I was at work....on my break.
Evangeline wakes up after a horrendous car accident severely injures her, and kills her father. Not only does she have to deal with the grief and guilt of the accident, but her mother turns into this awful horrible person who can't even support her own daughter in her deepest pain. Evangeline gets sent to a program for troubled teens where she finds redemption in the caring of a giraffe as heart-broken as she is.
The author does a superb job of capturing the emotions of grief, both in Evangeline, her mother, and Ruke, the giraffe. She captures the gruff father-like figure of Jett, and the ornery loveableness of PJ. I've read one other book by this author, and she truly has a way with story-telling. Two of her books have become some of my favorites, The Never, and now, Fragile Creatures. She writes just as well as Evangeline paints.
There aren't many books I give five stars to, because I truly feel that to earn 5 stars, your life has to be changed by it. I really think this book earns every one of these five stars. You won't walk away the same.

TheNinebooktourbanner

peacock-swamp-the-nine-katie-femia-style-FPeacock Swamp: Book 1 | The Nine

In 2064, The Nine are preparing to assemble. This board of individuals is President Madame LaFonte’s solution to an ailing nation in search of medical care. While it seemed ideal at first, the folks of the borough are quickly discovering it isn’t quite what it seems. The lucky ones are issued a red gown and another chance at life. That’s the happy ending. However, not everyone gets a red gown. The others have to make their own second chance at life--if they’ve got the heart to do what it takes. When the superstitions of the swamplands run just as deep as the mud, every little bit of luck helps. They named her Vitalia, a name that means life. But her name was the only advantage that she had. In need of a heart transplant, Vita leaves Peacock Swamp behind to stand before The Nine. With her family by her side, they run into the dangers that government healthcare has created: an underground medical clinic that services the rejected citizens...for a price. Her whole life has been a struggle. Why should her death be any different?

 RATING: 4 stars

REVIEW: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In this book we follow the story of Vitalia, a teenage girl with a weak heart. Not truly a weak heart as in emotional, but a weak heart as in, its congenital heart failure, and its getting worse. Her parents do the only option that is legally available to them. They take her and their younger son to the capital city where hopefully, the Nine members of the council will determine that Vitalia's case is absolutely awful enough, and she is worthy enough, for them to step in and give her a new heart.
During their trip into the capital, Vitalia and her little brother evade the underground black market of body parts that the government has unwittingly created as they wait for her time before the Council and their judgement that will ultimately determine her life.
This book was very well-written, though I found the beginning to be hard to get into and a bit sluggish. The last third of the book completely swept me away, and by the end, I completely fell in love with the book. The ending had a horrifying twist to it that made me need to read the next.

BOOK TOUR: Fighting to Forgive by JB Salsbury

PBT banner FTF

Fighting to Forget

FightingtoForgetEvery fighter is drawn to the violence, the release that a perfect hit can bring. But very few are drawn to the pain. Rex Carter lives behind a wall of indifference. The demons from his childhood act as an anesthetic, keeping him distant from emotional connections. Only the ache from a knock to the jaw, the sting of a tattoo needle, or the heat from a piercing can jolt him back from the numbness. The fiery pain is all he can feel, and nothing compares to the burn. Or so he thought. Working in a Las Vegas bar isn't Georgia McIntyre's dream. But she hopes it'll be an end to the nightmare. She's watched him, followed him and kept tabs, all in preparation for this moment: to make amends and share the secret she’s been carrying since she was a kid. But she didn't count on the feelings that seeing him again would stir up, the vacant look in his stormy-blue eyes, and his perfect body now mutilated by ink and metal. And she knows why. She's lived his pain every single day, since the day he left. Changed by time, Rex doesn't remember the girl from his past. If only she could do the same. Will she get the absolution she's spent her life seeking? Or will he continue Fighting to Forget?

About the author:

katy Thank you for having me here today. My main loves are writing, painting and singing. I began work as a PA but to my joy was spotted by an agent in London and had an exciting career as a singer, meeting and singing with some wonderful people. Singing meant a lot of travelling both in the UK and abroad. At one time, I toured Germany and Turkey singing for the American troops, which was a fantastic experience. But then, my husband and I wanted a family, so I said good-bye to the singing career, although I did the occasional gig. Having children is such a precious time, and I would say to anyone, treasure it, it goes so quickly and before you know it, you’re waving them off to Uni or pursuing their own dreams and their own homes. I have always had a deep interest in psychology for various reasons, and especially the area of neurosis arising from abuse. Later, I was to study how we could use our body, mind and spirit to relieve pain and overcome some life-threatening diseases. One important thing here is, I always told my patients to continue with medical treatment along with the complementary and spiritual methods, for I believe medical research and medication is also a gift from God, Spirit or the Universe, as each of us wishes to name it. I have loved writing from a child and during the years of study, research and treating some wonderful people, whom I called my friends, I would write at night, mainly short stories, and reams of poetry. I wanted to learn how to write self-help books for my clients, so I took creative writing courses at university, which led to writing a novel. So self-help novels turned to fiction but even so, I hope the novels help the reader through their own challenges, as the characters experience love, loss, passion, jealousy, illness, joy and conflict, even the threat of death. At present, I am writing the third book in the series ‘Lady Phillipa’s Peril’ and also putting together some ideas for the self-help book. This has been so enjoyable thank you.
