 EXCERPT:

Jade reached into the box then sat next to him, holding a small stack of old photos. She handed him the one on top. It was a black and white portrait. The woman in them had coiffed and perfectly styled hair. Other than the grim set of her lips, she looked nearly identical in the face to the woman sitting next to him.

“It’s eerie, isn’t it?”

Tearing his eyes from the photo, Reed glanced at her. She was leaning over his shoulder, her cheek very close to his. He could smell the sweet scent of her. He wondered if she still tasted like cotton candy.

“It’s pretty amazing,” he said.

She looked up from the photo and their eyes met. There was a twinkle in her eyes. His gaze drifted down as she licked her bottom lip. His body stiffened. He so badly wanted to nip at that lip with his teeth. Was she doing it on purpose?

As if sensing his thoughts, she broke the spell and reached for the photo. Her fingers brushed his and lingered. When he moved, he moved fast. Gripping her hand, he pulled her to him. His lips crushed down over hers. It took him by surprise when she met his fervor by running her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck and pulled him closer.

A growl escaped his throat and his tongue darted into her mouth. Just as he’d remembered. So sweet.

When she leaned back into the couch, pulling him with her, he followed, his lips never leaving hers. He couldn’t get enough of her. One hand cupped the line of her jaw as the other ran up the side of her hip, caressing the curves of her body. He slipped under the hem of her shirt and cupped her breast. Her back arched into his touch. Wanting to taste every inch of her, his lips trailed down her neck, licking and nipping her skin. The way she took in short gasps of breath, then sighed with sounds of pleasure, made his blood run hot and he felt desperate for her. His lips met hers again and his hips pressed against her.

Then suddenly she pulled back and pressed her hands to his chest. “We can’t, Reed.”

Confused, he looked into her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

Shaking her head, she shoved back and sat up, pulling her legs up under her. “It’s just…” Her voice trailed off.

He sat back on the couch. “It’s what? Don’t say it’s not right, Jade, because I don’t believe you think that for a minute. Not after the reaction you just gave me. So what is it?”

She’d been avoiding his gaze, then she finally looked up. “There’s someone else.”

Addy kept her back to me as she began to disrobe.  I watched as first she unbuttoned her jeans, pushing them past her hips and then bending slightly at the waist to pull them off one leg at a time.  One very thin layer of lilac cotton was all that stood between Addy and the complete exposure of her most intimate areas.  My throat constricted.  She was punishing me, deliberately inflicting pain with no regard to her own safety.
"Stop," I barely managed to whisper.
She grabbed the hem of her raglan and yanked it over her head without grace, slinging it on top of the jeans in the floor.  I knew I should, but I couldn't look away.  Her hands fluttered to her mid-back to grapple with the hook enclosure of her bra.
Oh, God.

Excerpt #2

He was really going to do it.  He was really going to set me free.  I hadn't spoken a word, terrified that I would somehow give away my plan to pull off his appendages like the petals of a daisy the moment I was free of my restraints.
He pointed the remote at the metal framework and paused.  "I trust I don't need to point out attacking me would not be in your best interest."  The words were delivered as a statement, but his hand held the remote in midair, as if waiting for an answer.
"That would be very foolish indeed," I said, making my face as expressionless as possible.
For the first time since I'd met the man, he smiled a genuine smile.  And then he pressed the button that allowed me to slide free from my bindings.

1. I have disturbingly large feet for a girl, but it kind of makes sense since I'm six feet tall.
2. I knit and crochet.
3. I homeschool my son.
4. The first thing I ever had published was a poem in Teen magazine in the late 80's entitled "Books", and I still have that issue thanks to my mom.
5. Gray, rainy days make me ridiculously happy.
6. I played professional women's football for three years as a starting defensive lineman.
7. Though not current since the 90's, I do have my license in cosmetology, and I used to compete in haircut competitions.
8. I'm currently an RN.
9. I can't keep a light bulb working for more than a couple months - tops. They are continuously blowing out.

Ember Shane was born in Oak Ridge, TN, but currently resides with her son in southern Ohio.  When she isn't writing, she enjoys watching her son's insanely accurate impressions of Jim Carey and crossing items off her bucket list.  This year's plans involve traveling to Disney World for the first time, playing in a local volleyball tournament, and learning to sew.  
Of Royal Descent, the first book in The Doyle Hawthorne Series, was her debut novel.  Ember is currently working on the third novel in the series, tentatively schedule to be released summer 2015.

About the Author:

I am an avid reader of chick lit, romance and fantasy, caffeine addict and a badge-wearing Mr. Darcy/Colin Firth fan. I released my first book at the age of six. It had six postcard-size pages stitched together and bound in velvet paper. The book was titled “Eliza and Robert” and had atrocious mistakes in every single word. Some words were written in mirror image. Unintentionally. I remember being immensely proud of my creation. Turns out there’s a remarkable constancy to my life: decades later, I still love the name Robert and the genre romance. As for my spelling and grammar, they are only marginally better than at age six (thank God for editors!). I live and work in Paris, France.
