GUEST POST:
My Writing Life and Process
There is lots going on in my writing world right now. Book six in the MacLarens of Fire Mountain series, Wilder than the Rest, and book three in the MacLarens of Fire Mountain contemporary series, One More Day, are debuting the week of June 16, which is very exciting.
My new series, Redemption Mountain, is officially in progress. It takes place in the mid-1800s. The books will be historical western romances and I’m very excited to finally get these stories on paper my readers.
Another historical western romance series is planned for 2015. I am very busy!
What is included in my writer’s world?
Readers tell me my writing is character focused, meaning that the reader gets to know and connect with the main characters as well as sub-characters. There is a feeling of “I know them,” which is very satisfying.
Most of my writing is within a series, so a sense of connection with characters is important to drive the stories from one book to another.
Another difference is the action and adventure associated with my books. My stories are romance, yet there is much more to the stories than boy meets girl, then they fall in love. At times readers will find equal parts of romance and action in my stories. For me, this combination moves the story along more quickly than with many other romance books. I have quite a number of male readers and I believe my stories appeal to them due to the fast-paced style.
My major in college started out as American History. Through the years the major changed but my love of historical America did not. My favorite period has always been 1765 through 1890, and it is within this time span that my historicals are based. Although I enjoy writing contemporary romance with hints of romantic suspense, my heart is always drawn back to historicals.
I’ve found to keep myself on track, I need to follow a routine and process that keeps me motivated.
How does my writing process work?
Ideas come from everywhere—dreams, people watching, other stories. For me, they mainly just pop into my head. I jot down every story idea, not ignoring any thought as I never know when a theme will develop into a full novel.
I use spiral bound notebooks for each series and one for each story within a series. These are used to outline basic story ideas, record character names, ages, locations, and themes. At some point all this is transferred onto spreadsheets. These ‘tools’ are used as the basis for each story.
The difficult part of the process is getting the uninterrupted time to write. It’s hard to write every day. That’s my goal and some days I write 4000 – 5000 words, while others I stall at 1000. The important thing for me is to make time to write each day.
I’d love to hear your comments and questions.

Awesome Giveaway!

My Review: I received a copy of this Bible in exchange for an honest review.
I've been looking for a strictly reading Bible for a few months now. I've been trying to keep up with a daily Bible reading plan, and I've noticed that with my study Bibles, I tend to get distracted by all the extraneous cool stuff. As much as I love it, it tends to make my reading twice as long. Perhaps a good Christian wouldn't complain about the extra time spent with her Bible, but when I've got 2 little kids pulling me in ten different directions as I'm trying to read it, it gets a bit overwhelming. I know what you're thinking....a good Christian woman would put aside non-distracting time to read. I have yet to find that time in my day.
Which led me to look at this Bible for review, and I fell in love with it. I'm a fan of the NIV translation. The black faux leather duo-tone cover in black is soft and easy to handle. The pages are edged in silver, which is set off nicely with the black cover and black ribbon. If I were giving this Bible as a gift (which I'm not), it has a beautiful presentation page in black, gray and while. The pages are extremely thin, which can make it hard to turn the pages as you read it. Jesus' words are in red, I'm neither here nor there about that. Some people really like that, but I don't care either way.
Overall, this is just a very beautiful, lightweight Bible, perfect for your daily reading, or giving as a gift.

REVIEW: The Case For Christ Student Edition by Lee Strobel

Title: The Case for Christ Student Edition
Series: The Case For Series by Lee Strobel
Author: Lee Strobel
Published Date: republish expected June 24, 2014 (originally published 2001)
Publisher: Zondervan
Format: paperback
Pages: 128
ISBN: 9780310745648
Copy provided by: BookLook Bloggers (Library for the original edition)
Genre: religion
Add to: Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon
Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis: There's little question that he actually lived. But miracles? Rising from the dead? Some of the stories you hear about him sound like just that---stories. A reasonable person would never believe them, let alone the claim that he's the only way to God! But a reasonable person would also make sure that he or she understood the facts before jumping to conclusions. That's why Lee Strobel---an award-winning legal journalist with a knack for asking tough questions---decided to investigate Jesus for himself. An atheist, Strobel felt certain his findings would bring Christianity's claims about Jesus tumbling down like a house of cards. He was in for the surprise of his life. Join him as he retraces his journey from skepticism to faith. You'll consult expert testimony as you sift through the truths that history, science, psychiatry, literature, and religion reveal. Like Strobel, you'll be amazed at the evidence---how much there is, how strong it is, and what it says. The facts are in. What will your verdict be in The Case for Christ?

Review: I borrowed a copy of this book from the library, originally. Now I have received a copy of The Case for Christ, Student Edition, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Since these are ultimately, the same book, I will give the same review.
I remember originally reading this book and really being amazed at the level of answers that were in this book. I'm sure its nothing more than any good journalist would put together if they were doing thorough research.
I appreciate the fact that there are source notes in the book. I myself can go back and double-check the sources myself. I found myself writing down a lot of the original sources when I first read the book, in hopes of going back and doing my own research.
Perhaps down the line when I'm not a full-time worker, wife, and mother of two little kids, I may find the time to do that. Right now, I will have to content myself with the research of another person.
I find the student edition is a very very watered-down version of the original.

About The Author
Growing up in Southern California, I developed a love for the ocean and all things coastal. I lived inland for a few years in Atlanta, Phoenix, and Denver, only to be lured home by the sound of crashing waves and colorful sunsets.
I wrote Heaven or Hell, my first novel, during my treatment for stage IV cancer. The day after the final edit of this book, the doctor told me that I was in remission. I believe writing was a critical part of my recovery, and now it's integral to my life.
I'm lucky. I have a passion that keeps me awake at night, friends who have been in my life for decades, family that supports my craziness, a home on the beach, many more novels in my head, and a body that is healed. I am forever grateful.

Guest Post: Finding Your Passion

By Roni Teson
I do my own poll when I’m around people, in a group or one-on-one. I find that only about a third of the people I speak to have some type of passion in their life that they are aware of and can acknowledge. Might not always be creative or earth shattering, sometimes the passion is as simple as being a great mom and wife.

To have a passion is to have a purpose. Life with an acknowledged purpose will put pep in your step and so much more. If you haven’t identified your passion yet, as long as you’re breathing you still have time.

About four years ago, my life seemed perfect. A career as an executive, a long-term relationship, cars, homes, pets, and anything else I wanted—I had, or at least I thought I did.

I found a huge hard lump in my right breast and the doctor figured out after three weeks of testing, the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes and my sternum. I had stage IV breast cancer—a heavy diagnosis for somebody who had never been sick a day in her life.

Once I got through the initial cry, I put a list together of everything I wanted to do.  I recognized right away many of the things I loved to do I left behind, some of them for years. I owned several guitars, always a great escape for me. I hadn’t touched any of them in three years. My piano gathered dust. The novel I started writing two years prior waited for me. During chemotherapy, when my employer’s support waned, I focused on writing that book, and many of the other things on my list that I hadn’t done in years.

My relationship fell apart. That gave me the opportunity to move by the beach, an entry on my list! When I finished writing my novel I found out the cancer went into remission. I found another employer. The items on my life list continued to grow because I wanted plenty of things to keep me on this planet.

I used to scoff when I heard the words, “Be true to yourself.” I don’t anymore. I have to say my life before that diagnosis did not fulfill me. I lived for everyone else, including my employer. I know this to be true because the moment I took my eye off those things and focused on healing, my work, my relationship crumbled.

Easy to talk about now that I’m four years away from the devastation because I hurt when I went through the storm, it wasn’t easy. But I also recovered and found my passion. The universe jolted me into my new reality and thank God for that—I’m so stubborn my life had to happen in this manner to put me back on track.

What about you and finding your passion or being grateful for passions identified? I spent some time with an artist and we developed a set of passion cards. Symbols embedded in each design for the intention of that card: Career, Love, Health, Gratitude, etc

I never want anyone to go through what I went through to right track a life. I’d rather help you find a purpose, or a passion, or focus on an existing dream. If you want to know more, check out the two-minute video and see what Passion Cards are all aboutOrder a set or rejoice in your current existence, either way, I hope you find your passion and chase that dream to victory. Thank you for reading!

REVIEW: Dr. Who: The Tales of Trenzalore

Title: Dr. Who: Tales of Trenzalore: The Eleventh Doctor's Last Stand
Series: Dr Who (fan fiction)
Author: Justin Richards, Mark Morris, George Mann and Paul Finch
Published Date: February 27, 2014
Publisher: BBC Digital
Format: ebook
Pages: 192
  • ASIN: B00HVAX874
Copy provided by:NetGalley
Genre: science fiction

Purchase: Amazon
Rating: 4 stars
Synopsis: As it had been foretold, the armies of the Universe gathered at Trenzalore. Only one thing stood between the planet and destruction - the Doctor. For nine hundred years, he defended the planet, and the tiny town of Christmas, against the forces that would destroy it.
He never knew how long he could keep the peace. He never knew what creatures would emerge from the snowy night to threaten him next. He knew only that at the end he would die on Trenzalore.
Some of what happened during those terrible years is well documented. But most of it remains shrouded in mystery and darkness.
Until now.
This is a glimpse of just some of the terrors the people faced, the monstrous threats the Doctor defeated. These are the tales of the monsters who found themselves afraid - and of the one man who was not.
(Tales of Trenzalore documents four of the Doctor's adventures from different periods during the Siege of Trenzalore and the ensuing battle:

Let it Snow - by Justin Richards

An Apple a Day - by George Mann

Strangers in the Outland - by Paul Finch

The Dreaming - by Mark Morris)

My Review: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.
I found this collection of four short stories to be wonderful stories about the mysterious time that The Doctor was in the town of Christmas.
My favorite two of the four were the first two, Let It Snow and An Apple A Day. I found these two to really have the personality and quirkiness of speech that I love about Eleven. I found myself laughing out loud as I read these two stories, whereas I found the last two to be more serious and darker.
Overall, all four stories were extremely well-written (I'd be highly disappointed as a Whovian, if they were not well-written), and if you're a fellow Whovian, please find a copy of this book to delve more deeply into those mysterious age of time that Eleven was in Christmas.

REVIEW: Words: Spoken and Unspoken Forces by Anita Saleem

WordsBanner

WORDS Cover Version 04_1400x2100Words: Spoken and Unspoken Forces provides the key to understanding the secret power of words and traces how this power is activated by drawing references from various authors and experts in psychology, philosophy, medicine, and semiotics. The author presents a theoretical model to understand why words affect individuals by suggesting that words color emotions, shape behaviors, and influence physiological functioning to create an overall impact (whether positive or negative). Drawing upon several scientific studies, this book will help the reader understand why words are spoken and unspoken forces that have the potential to shape the future.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars

My Review: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book does a pretty thorough job of explaining through illustrations and the referencing of scientific data that words, whether spoken or simply thought of, have the power to change our very reality. The author explains through examples from different world religions, different psychological theories, and scientific data that words have always been very rudimentary to ourselves as human beings.
It is a fascinating book to read, and when you start contemplating it, very true. I've said many times that I wish I had a 10 second pause button on some people so I can protect my children from their words. Once said and heard, can never be unsaid and unheard. Untold psychological damage can and does occur to each of us from words said thoughtlessly.
As good of a book as this is, and as thought-provoking as it is, part of the end had a very Christian theme to it. Being a Christian, I didn't mind it, however, those followers of other religions may find it offensive or unnecessary.
