About the author:

Thank you for having me here today. My main loves are writing, painting and singing. I began work as a PA but to my joy was spotted by an agent in London and had an exciting career as a singer, meeting and singing with some wonderful people. Singing meant a lot of travelling both in the UK and abroad. At one time, I toured Germany and Turkey singing for the American troops, which was a fantastic experience. But then, my husband and I wanted a family, so I said good-bye to the singing career, although I did the occasional gig. Having children is such a precious time, and I would say to anyone, treasure it, it goes so quickly and before you know it, you’re waving them off to Uni or pursuing their own dreams and their own homes. I have always had a deep interest in psychology for various reasons, and especially the area of neurosis arising from abuse. Later, I was to study how we could use our body, mind and spirit to relieve pain and overcome some life-threatening diseases. One important thing here is, I always told my patients to continue with medical treatment along with the complementary and spiritual methods, for I believe medical research and medication is also a gift from God, Spirit or the Universe, as each of us wishes to name it. I have loved writing from a child and during the years of study, research and treating some wonderful people, whom I called my friends, I would write at night, mainly short stories, and reams of poetry. I wanted to learn how to write self-help books for my clients, so I took creative writing courses at university, which led to writing a novel. So self-help novels turned to fiction but even so, I hope the novels help the reader through their own challenges, as the characters experience love, loss, passion, jealousy, illness, joy and conflict, even the threat of death. At present, I am writing the third book in the series ‘Lady Phillipa’s Peril’ and also putting together some ideas for the self-help book. This has been so enjoyable thank you.

REVIEW: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My adolescence was filled with immersing myself in the genre of science fiction. Star Trek and later books were my companions of choice. When I saw this book, though I haven't read the first in the series, I felt an urge to go back to those times of warp engines and aliens and courageous officers saving the ship that is their life.
I got it all, I got the warp engines (called a Faster Than Light (FTL) engine here), the aliens (those bad Titans, nothing can ever come good from methane), and Lieutenant Henry Gallant provided the courageous officer from the very first page. Also, in true original Star Trek fashion, I also got the romance with Lieutenant Gallant and Alaina. These are all wonderful things.
Its what else was there that made me not like the book as much as I should have. Details. I love details as much as all other readers, I love being immersed in the world I am reading. However, I found that there were so many details that it bogged down the storyline and made my eyes glaze over. A brief mention of the physics behind the FTL engine is fine, but when the reader is forced into a page of quantum physics in a fictional book, its too much. The detailed minutiae behind fixing the ship is really unnecessary unless it pulls the storyline forward. For instance, a chapter of the details of the building of the factories necessary to fix the ship is absolutely unnecessary unless I see the breakdown of the engines of one of the transport vehicles is going to push the storyline further.
Less detail in this book would have made for a much better storyline that wasn't so stop and go.

When Angelica adjusts her sunglasses, Olivia notices her best friend’s black eye.

“Oh, sweetie, what happened?” Olivia reaches across the sticky table for Angelica’s hands but she moves them quickly; as if Olivia’s touch is a flame that will burn her beyond recognition.

Angelica chews on her bottom lip. “Nothing.”

“I’m worried about you.”

“There’s nothing to worry about, Olivia.” She separates the ‘O’ from the ‘livia.’

A spunky orange haired waitress arrives at their table. Her name tag reads “Bad Susie” with a little devil sticker next to it. “Can I take your order?”

“Plain coffee, please,” Olivia says.

“Same here,” Angelica says.

Susie places a hand on her hip. “You sure you don’t want pancakes? Eggs and toast?”

They shake their heads.

Bad Susie tilts her head, focusing on Angelica. “You’re worth so much more.”

“What?” Angelica winces.

“You’re wearing sunglasses indoors, long sleeves and jeans, and it’s like eighty degrees outside. And your makeup is only partially covering your bruises. Obviously your boyfriend is a beater. Just know you’re worth more than that.” Before Angelica has a chance to respond, Susie moves to the next table.

Myles was a portly man with black hair and blue eyes wearing jeans, a brown knit shirt, and a green jacket that was too insubstantial for the chilly outdoors of Sedalia, Missouri. He stood as still as a statue, transfixed by the two fist-sized crystal cubes resting on the ground at his feet. Swirling, mist-like energy spilled from the devices and sank deep into the dirt to the ancient structure far below. Myles was positioned near the far edge of the dying cornfield which hadn’t been tended to for several months. His body shivered but he didn’t care in the least. His attention was absorbed by the task at hand. It had taken weeks to find this place and now it was taking days to fix the remains of the facility buried underground. It was one of many similar structures containing advanced and powerful technology built by humans many centuries ago. Compared to the civilization now, it was hard to imagine humans had created such marvels. Not much had remained of this facility but it had been enough for the nanites of the crystal cubes to begin their work of restoration. Myles ignored the discomfort of his body as it grew colder. He simply didn’t care what happened to it. APU 81 inhabited this human and to its way of thinking, there were plenty of humans around to spare.
It took all of APU 81’s concentration to direct the nanites to work as efficiently as possible. The perimeter of the facility spanned several miles and APU 81 had set up a disruption field to prevent APU 4093 from detecting the terramezic energy in use. It was absolutely vital that APU 81 continue to work in secret until it seized control of this facility. Myles tore his gaze from the crystal cubes, known as NPX regeneration units, because he detected a human life form approaching. He still maintained most of his mental capacity on directing the nanites but resented the small portion of concentration it required to deal with the unwelcome guest. Myles watched the man stride over toward him. He was average height, in his forties, with thinning brown hair, a mustache, and green eyes. He wore a plaid shirt and jeans and his name was Ernest, the town sheriff. Sedalia boasted a meager population of about twelve hundred and Myles had recently purchased this abandoned farm that rested just outside of the border. APU 81 had believed the isolation of this area would afford him privacy but that was far from the truth. The nosy inhabitants of this town found many reasons to stop by. On the other hand, APU 81 figured if this had been a big city, the neighbors would probably be just as bad. Humans were a constant nuisance that it was forced to contend with.
“Greetings, sheriff,” Myles said in a pleasant tone.
Ernest leveled a curious look at him. “I’ve received reports that there are strange spells going on here.”
“Strange spells?” Myles flashed an amused smile. “I’m working on a revolutionary enchantment that will enhance the soil and result in faster and better crops in the area. It’s very important work.”

About the Author:

John O'Riley has been writing as far back as he can remember. He is an author of novels and an award winning writer of screenplays in the category of urban fantasy, comedy, science fiction and young adult. His movie feature screenplay, Cursed, is an Honorable Mention Winner for the 2012 Screenplay Festival. His most recent accomplishments include the screenplays New Earth, Pinky Swear, and Mutant Wizards in the 2014 Filmmakers International Screenplay Awards which made it to Quarter-Finalist status. My Review: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
At the end of the previous book, Doon, I was devastated. MacKenna and Duncan, who were so obviously destined for each other, separated through MacKenna's absolutely foolish martyr-complexed act of leaving Duncan behind in Doon while she gallivanted back to Chicago to pursue an acting career.Now, a year later, after numerous visions of Duncan, and realising that her life will never be complete without Duncan, and suddenly he shows up.
I absolutely loved the previous book in this series, and I had high hopes for this one. The authors surpassed all of my expectations and more. From the beginning, the story was action packed and drove me to read more and more. The heartbreak and hope between Kenna and Duncan was so palpable, I nearly started crying numerous times, wanting to simultaneously slap, scream at, and hug both of them.
Don't think that Veronica and Jamie got away without some romantic issues of their own. And of course, the ending had its own special cliffhanger. Was it a better cliffhanger than the previous book's? I'm not sure, but the quality of storytelling by the authors is so good that I can't wait for the next one.

A refugee from communism and the bitter cold of Poland, I lived in South Africa for 16 years. It’s certainly not a trendy setting for a novel, and I know people on either sides of the political spectrum will find OPERATION: GENOCIDE controversial. By trying to portray what South Africa was like at the height of its apartheid era, by inspecting both sides of the coin, I’m sure I’ve managed to offend all parties.

Still, I’m not sorry. South Africa means a lot of things to a lot of people: lions in long yellow grass, diamond mines, apartheid, Nelson Mandela, rugby. All of those images are right, yet none of them - in my opinion - are representative of the misunderstood country or its people. None of them describe what it’s like to live in South Africa, both in the 1980s and today.

I’d like my readers to smell the red dust of the continent and to fall in love with Africa the way I did when I first set foot there as an impressionable teenager. I left my heart in Africa, and I invite you to do the same.
