EXCERPT:

Varik stepped into my line of sight, slipping his long leather trench coat off his shoulders and letting it fall to the ground, his shirt sleeves missing, his Mark trailing up both of his forearms.

Impressive. Well, if I was going to buy time, this might be the way.

“Synn,” Varik barked. “Come out of hiding.”

I swallowed. I could do this.

“Are you scared, little boy?”

Why, yes. Yes I was, but I had to stop thinking that way. I’d practiced for this day. I knew what I was capable of. I had one of the strongest Marks ever known, and he had no idea the potential I held.

“Your queen wants you back, boy!”

“She’s not my queen,” I growled, ripping the shirt over my head and baring nearly all my Marks.

Varik stood in the middle of the platform. His eyes flared as he evaluated my Mark.

It was just a fancy tattoo without the power to raise it. I closed my eyes, turning my fear to hate, morphing my doubt into a driving force. I didn’t have the luxury to be weak. The people of Egolda City needed my Mark. It flared in lightning fire like lava, lifting from my arms, back and chest.

The guards flinched, backing away.

“You’ve grown, boy,” Varik said quietly. “Your queen will be pleased.”

I let out a long breath, letting the rage fill my heart, allowing reason to fill my head.

Varik popped his neck. “Well, let’s just see how much you’ve learned, shall we?” His Mark flashed from his arms in whips of orange fire.

The lightning lava prancing around me was just for show and distraction. What I really needed was water. Good thing we were surrounded by it. I reached out with my power source, keeping my element pointed at Varik. I heated the ocean waters, drawing them up in swirls of wind and clouds to hover above us.

He lashed out with his fire.

I let loose a whip of lava.

His little spark caught me across the cheek.

He fell backward, his knees crumbling as my lava found its target. Contempt rippled across his face as he reached into his pocket.

The detonation device! I rushed him, a chill running through me.

But before I could get to him, he pulled something silver and cylindrical out of his pocket.

I stopped, my Mark ready to launch.

A cold smile slithered across his lips. “I win this time, Primus.”

I ground my jaw, trying to calculate how fast I could knock the remote from his hand. Not fast enough. “I’m no Primus.” I could only hope that I’d bought enough time to save most everyone.

“Yes.” He raised the remote, his thumb hovering over the end of the device. “You are, more than you know.” His thumb mashed down on the button.

Explosions sounded all around us.

Darkness. The feeling that large shapes hem her in on all sides is overwhelming. She tries to move, but her body is held fast by unseen hands gripping her arms and shoulders. 

Yellow Bird! she cries. Help me! 

Easy. I am here. Remember, none of this is real. Step out of your dream-self and become the watcher.

Deanna struggles to break free, but the grip of the hands grow stronger. I don’t know how!

Deanna relaxes, and the panic threatening to overthrow her sanity flows through her like water through a sieve, leaving calm in its wake. Her unseen bonds loosen. She steps away…

...and sees herself, standing before her stepmother in Lourdessa’s mayoral office, flanked by two huge shadows that ripple in the half-light, as if made of black water. Soon, she hears rapid footsteps. Two figures plunge into the alley at a dead run. They hurtle toward Deanna, then skid to a stop several paces from where she stands. She cannot see them yet in the shadow. Their breaths rattle and wheeze in their throats. She hears stark fear when one of them catches enough breath to speak.

They’re right behind us, Zander! 

Horrified, Deanna realizes that, somehow, Zander has been caught up in this deadly scene.

A black cloud congeals at the alley’s entrance. In eerie silence, it floats toward the shivering fugitives. 

Deanna can only watch, helpless to intervene. I wanted to see this, she reminds herself.

Zander takes Deanna’s dream-self into his arms and kisses her with the passion of a man savoring the last beautiful thing he will feel before death.

The cloud becomes a pack of Specials. They halt and raise their ee-pistols. The barrels crackle with blue static. 

Zander pushes dream-Deanna behind him, offering his body as a shield, paltry though it be, in a vain attempt to save her life.

No, she whispers, then lays her head on Zander’s shoulders and closes her eyes.

#REVIEW: Resisting Redemption by Bonnie Paulson

This is the third book in a series where the plot points carry over. All plot points will be resolved by book FIVE - the end of the series. This is a sweet style romance. With her heart at war with her mind, Lisa’s need to chase dangerous fun over boring responsibilities tugs at her emotions. Love is the last thing she expects to find, especially with her past revolting against her future. The only love Ryan’s heart has room for is for his motherless son. But, when he finds himself yearning for Lisa, Ryan has to convince himself and her that he’s all the thrill she’ll ever need. Will Lisa’s past destroy their future before either of them can accept the true meaning of love?

MY REVIEW: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've been pretty obsessed with Lisa since book 2. What would make her so high and mighty, so defensive, so prickly? We finally get her story, and it is to be expected that it is a patient's family member that she falls for. That was pretty much a no-brainer. She is running from her past as one of the daughters of this huge Midwestern gang leader, even if, as a child, she did do anything to get his approval. She knows her parentage, it's not a surprise to her.
In this book, she develops into a more likable character towards the end of the book, she even becomes a little lovable.She works with a child with spina bifida, helping him to get out of the wheelchair and walk on his on with the assistance of a walker. I don't know much about spina bifida, so I don't know how realistic it is for a child with it to walk unaided in the woods, but perhaps it is a reflection of the child's strength of character and stubbornness as well as her abilities as a therapist.
I have enjoyed reading and watching Lisa develop as a character and the book kept me reading from the very beginning.

MY REVIEW: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was a little leery of reviewing any baking or cook books simply because I am (rightfully) banned from the kitchen for being a natural disaster in it. Stoves and ovens have a healthy respect of me, and it is mutual. Food tends to cry if I walk towards it with the intent of cooking or baking, knowing it will end up inedible in some way, shape or form.
My older daughter was in charge of reading, my younger daughter in charge of listening. I had to split the food duties between them equally, and then we started. Somehow, more through the amazing recipe of the author, and less from my legendary baking skills, we ended up with some edible, and actually, REALLY good chocolate chip cookies!
This was a great book to introduce kids to the world of baking, and gave them cute ways of doing things, like cracking an egg (without the shell going in too!), correctly measuring the dry ingredients, etc. We really enjoyed our time together in the kitchen that I normally would have avoided.

Reviewed by www.mikishope.com This is a perfect 1st cookbook for children to start learning the art of baking. There is only one recipe but it comes with a storyline. Mimi wants to bake cookies and Grandma is going to teach her the correct way!! What fun--you have to be real careful with the measurements and ingredients and you also have to know when to let a grown up take over! This little book has it all covered. Actually I might even be able to bake cookies after having read this!! This is only one in a series of books with recipes-one to a book that this chef author has written. I suggest you read about the author below-it is intriguing. Then go and pre order this book for your little chef/baker! What a fabulous book! Not only does this book describe the technique and recipe for baking cookies, but it also focuses on a story. There are many ways to read this story. You can simple read it as a wonderful book. You can focus on the bright illustrations. The ingredients and steps make for the perfect math focus... and it also reads as an activity book that you can read while you bake. In every way, this book earns my 5 star review... And now, I'm going to bake some cookies.

My Review: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book, even caught myself making notes in it, which rarely ever happens when I read books, but I can see myself going back and reading it again, and writing even more notes.

The book starts out with a quick historical introduction to before Jesus was born, from Abraham onwards. It’s quick, and not very detailed, having compressed 2000ish years worth of history into 6 pages, but it’s an easy way to refresh your Biblical history. After the introduction starts the story behind the day Jesus was tried, condemned, sentenced and killed through a very gory crucifixion. Each chapter after that presents the happenings (the disappearance of the body of Jesus and appearance to the women, then disciples) as they occur chronologically, and explains it in understandable level that the every day reader can get, not requiring the reader to need a master’s degree in theology.

It is great to see the immediate present after the crucifixion explained in such easy to understand language, as well as the people surrounding it. I have found the people in the Bible to be very dry and hard to understand at times. Books like these truly bring them to life again in a fascinating way.

I made sure to finish this book before I watched the first episode of the mini-series presented on NBC: AD: The Bible Continues created by LightWorkers Media.

The morning had passed into early midday when Onyx's ear flickered and his stride faltered. It wasn't long before I heard what he was hearing. Hoof beats, coming fast and hard behind us. The first horse sounded like one of the light fast messenger horses. There were at least two other horses giving chase.

I signaled Onyx to move into the forest and pulled out my bow. I had an arrow notched by the time the messenger passed me. Hot on his heels were three brigand. I let the arrow fly and was surprised that it actually hit the lead rider in the throat. He fell in front of one of the other horses which didn't have time to miss him. The horse went down tripping over the body. The rider went flying, he would be easy to catch.

Now I just had to chase down the third rider. I pushed Onyx into a gallop, pulling my sword out at the same time. He glanced back and saw me, almost falling off his horse on his own. I would have laughed, but I was about to either take his life or capture him. Both options would not bode well for him. He pulled a sword. I could not risk getting injured or having my horse injured. He would have to die.

I rode up next to him, knocked his sword up leaving his side open. I thrust my sword up under his arm aiming for his heart. When I pulled it out blood spouted from the wound. He fell from the horse dead. I cringed a little when his foot got stuck in the stirrup. The horse took off dragging the body with him. That could be dealt with later. There was a cavalier outpost not far from here. They could clean up that mess.

If you look in the local coffee shop or bookstore you might just find Mariana Thorn. She can usually be found with headphones in and deep into the worlds she has created. There is this thing about her pens, if you touch them you might receive a smack to the hand and the well-known glare of destruction. Besides writing, Mariana enjoys reading, photography, and playing with her dog. She lives in Western Washington, but loves to travel to Florida to sit on the beach to write.
