Title: Saga of the New Gods: Be Careful What You Wish For
Author: Daniel Black
Series: New Earth #1
Publishers: Smashwords
Published Date: May 30, 2011
ISBN: 9781458084019

Synopsis: The time has come, Hells gates shall be thrown wide and the power of creation shall run rampant upon the earth.
In this, the first book of the “Saga of the New Gods,” a group of young college students bring about Armageddon in the most literal sense of the word. With a simple wish upon a unique wedding band given to him by his love, Michelle, Adam unleashes a power that could – if left to reign unchecked – destroy the entire world…
The story begins with a couple of young women, Chelsea and Michelle, bearers of a tragic past, fighting to create a future for themselves. They travel to an old pawn shop in the town of Athens, Ohio, and purchase a ring for Michelle to give to her love, Adam, in the hopes of becoming his wife. A poorly timed wish after the gift of the ring has dire consequences however, as magic enters the world. All that they know, or have known, begins to come unraveled as first their comfortable existence in this bucolic town is ripped from them, then their future. They reach their moment of greatest despair as one of their number flees, another lays near death, and another sleeps in a state akin to a coma… In this moment of vulnerability a man arrives offering a glimmer of hope, Mathew Banks, a federal officer, arrives with the dawn to take them to a place of safety and security. But what is secure when the very laws that govern reality begin to unravel? What is safe when those who watch over you risk change from day to day, moment to moment, and even those who are your closest friends deceive you and risk more than your lives, but the very souls that make you who you are?
This first story tells the tale of the creation of this new world, as the series continues you will rise to the heights of this world and others, and to the very depths of hell.

Excerpt
Chapter 3
Old man Mcgilicuddy
The Cellar, Athens, Ohio
3:47 p.m., June 5th, 2021
The small bell above the door to the pawnshop tinkled pleasantly as the two girls
entered, laughing about something said before they’d come in.
The girls could not appear more different. One was tall and boyishly thin,
somewhere around the six foot mark, with a small chest and hips that were barely
there. She could easily pass as a boy, and her clothes helped the illusion, being boy’s
pants and a T-shirt. She wore a denim coat that further obscured her small chest. Her
face was plain, and this was accentuated by her lack of any makeup whatsoever.
The other girl was average height for a girl, with long, blonde hair with red
highlights that must have taken a lot of time to arrange in so natural a manner. She
wore makeup, but so artfully applied that it took a very aware eye to realize it; every
feature was accentuated to its greatest advantage without being the joker’s mask
so common among young women and girls these days. She wore a midriff top that
showed the roundness of her ample bosom, with a shirt designed to support and
accentuate without a brassiere. Her hip-hugging jeans seemed to hang on her, always
within a moment of falling off, with her intensely sexy, slow walk always seeming
to be about to break their tenuous hold, and drawing every male eye to that revealed
waist. She seemed to radiate an unconscious aura of sex, and boys—as well as men
who should have known better—sniffed after her like hounds.
The taller of the two sneezed, holding a hand to her nose as she did so.
Old man Mcgilicuddy chuckled to himself as the completely unfeminine sneeze
threw off his contemplation of the hot, young Chelsea.
With a gross snort of mucus back into her nasal cavities that made Chelsea
grimace in disgust, Michelle announced by way of explanation, “Dust.” Her voice was
pleasant, as always, but in a low octave that could be mistaken for a boy’s voice as
Old man Mcgilicuddy grinned at her as she entered; maybe she was the one? If
she was, he would know soon enough. He took off his glasses and began to polish
them with a careful hand as he sat perched upon several boxes behind the sales
counter that served as his chair. With his one good eye staring into the cupped lenses
as he scrubbed the left lens, he knew what he looked like, and had even grown to like
both it and the reaction he could get from people that were easily grossed out by the
macabre marble occupying his right eye socket, though he couldn’t help but sigh as
Chelsea scurried past with a bottom you could bounce a quarter off of. But young
women like her were not for him now; he was scary Old man Mcgilicuddy, with the
one eye and the white marble resting in the socket of the other.
He replaced the lenses on his long nose and peered appreciatively after the girls;
if he couldn’t ride the rides any more, he could still enjoy the show.

Dimitri Kallinikos, a devastatingly handsome shape-shifting griffin, needs Lizzie to slay a demon of his own. But how do you talk a girl you've never met into going straight to the underworld? Lie. And if that doesn't work how dangerous could a little seduction be...?
Carpe Demon-
Retired demon hunter Kate Connor must go back to work when she spots a demon lurking in the local Wal-Mart. But she'd better not arouse suspicion. This kind of thing could really hurt her husband's political career.
Girls Guide to Witchcraft-

For good-girl Jane Madison, neither has a shot in hell of coming true -- until the day she finds a hidden room . . . Now she's done a bit of experimenting and found a spell that makes her irresistible to men -- even those who have previously ignored her. And another that turns a cat into her witch's familiar (a snarky, critical, self-absorbed man -- pretty much a typical male). Though her impulsive acts of magic have brought a warder (sexy, grouchy, elusive and determined to stop her from using magic) down on her, Jane's not willing to let go of this fantastic new life. Though she wonders about having things that aren't "real," she's having too much fun to stop. After all, no one ever said being a witch was easy.
How to Date a Werewolf-
Romance can be a hairy business--especially when you're a werewolf. As the owner of Get a Mate Dating Service, Rylie is more than happy to step in and lend a hand to lonely lycanthropic hearts all over town. No matter how hopeless Rylie might be in finding her own soul mate, she has a knack for helping others find theirs. Convinced that she is stuck with a family curse, Rylie is positive she will never find her true love. But when drool-worthy Jack Chandler shows up at her door, Rylie wonders if maybe the curse is finally broken. But Rylie's life is about to become complicated courtesy of the after-dark crowd. When she begins receiving strange notes and harassment from a jilted client, events careen out of control. Jack knows she's more hassle than he can handle. What he doesn't know is whether she's seriously in trouble . . . or simply delusional.
Easy Bake Coven-
For Selene Warren being a witch is no big deal. She dabbles in harmless magic with her friends and never thinks much about it. However, when a stranger who seems to know her shows up at her studio and her grandmother is brutally attacked, her simple life becomes complicated. A world of elves, half-elves, fae—and one peculiar Sekhmet named Femi open up to her. She will discover that fairy tales are real, politics are ugly in any world, and there is a lot more to her life than she ever dreamed possible. This new reality threatens swallow Selene whole, but with a forgotten past beating down her door, she will have to dive in to save her future.

REVIEW: The Boleyn Deceit by Laura Andersen

Title: The Boleyn Deceit
Author: Laura Andersen
Series: Ann Boleyn Trilogy #2
Publisher: Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine
Published Date: expected Nov 5, 2013
ISBN: 9780345534118
Buy It Link: Amazon | Barnes and Noble
Rating: 4 1/2 stars

Synopsis: The regency period is over and William Tudor, now King Henry IX, sits alone on the throne. But England must still contend with those who doubt his legitimacy, both in faraway lands and within his own family. To diffuse tensions and appease the Catholics, William is betrothed to a young princess from France, but still he has eyes for only his childhood friend Minuette, and court tongues are wagging.

Even more scandalous—and dangerous, if discovered—is that Minuette’s heart and soul belong to Dominic, William’s best friend and trusted advisor. Minuette must walk a delicate balance between her two suitors, unable to confide in anyone, not even her friend Elizabeth, William’s sister, who must contend with her own cleaved heart. In this irresistible tale, the secrets that everyone keeps are enough to change the course of an empire.

Review: I'd like to thank Net Galley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
You can read my review of the first of this trilogy, The Boleyn King here. I was just as impressed with the second book as I was with the first. All of the political intrigue and royalty that you find in Philippa Gregory's books, you will find in here. It's an amazing, breath-taking book. The author writes so well, you are immediately transported into the what-if land of Henry IX's reign. Mary Tudor is in there, the future Queen Elizabeth (but does she end as Queen Elizabeth? that's for the next book!), Robert Dudley, and other historical characters that show up so well in this time period.
The love triangle between William (Henry IX), Dominic and Minuette is a common thread in the entire book, and just when you think it will come to a halt, it winds its way a little further. Is Elizabeth aware? Or isn't she?
This book keeps you guessing from the very beginning to the very end.

REVIEW: NIV Integrated Study Bible

Title: NIV Integrated Study Bible
Author: John R Kohlenberger
Publisher: Zondervan
Published Date: 8/22/2013
ISBN: 9780310411031
Buy it Link: Amazon
Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis: Read the Bible in “real time” with this Bible set in an innovative, new, chronologically-based format. This hardcover Bible aligns similar accounts of the events of the Bible, as well as presenting them in chronological order, to give you a complete, insightful view of the narrative of Scripture. Read the psalms of David right next to the events that prompted his writings. Read the parallel accounts of Jesus’ parables and miracles, and take away unique insights from each Gospel writer.

Review: I received a copy of this Bible from Book Sneeze in exchange for an honest review.
From most of the reviews I've read of this Bible, most of the reviewers have 20+ Bibles in their home. I have two, one of them is this one. The other is a beat up paperback, written-on copy of the New Standard Revised Version (NSRV) that I picked up out of guilt at a used book store. I will admit that its been opened about 3 times. I thought that this would be a good way for me delve deeper into the Bible, because frankly, the Bible is without a doubt the most difficult book I have ever attempted to read.
The way that I've been shown in how to read a Bible is to read a passage, and then read verses before and after it to really get a feel for what the author(s) meant by it. At one point in this study Bible, on page 410, there are two columns: 2 Samuel 8: 15-18 in the upper left hand corner, 1 Chronicles 18:14-17 directly next to it. Right under the 2 Samuel 8:15-18 is 2 Samuel 22:1-12 and right next to that is Psalm 18. and at the very bottom of each page of this study Bible is a small timeline, with an arrow, showing where exactly in history this was happening in. If you look in the index for the the verses directly after 2 Samuel 8: 15-18, it is found 23 pages later. The ones directly before it are found a mere 3 pages before. The verses from 1 Chronicles isn't much better.
For a new student like me, this Bible is not very helpful. However, I did check out another type of study Bible from the library as a comparison, the New Interpreter's Study Bible NSRV, and read Ruth side by side with the NIV Integrated. The language is easier to read than the NSRV, but the New Interpreter's Study Bible had better explanations.

Review: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
When I was approached by the author for a review of this book, I had to jump at the opportunity. A month ago or so when my computer was dead in the water, the tour company I usually review for, Promotional Book Tours, toured this book and I missed out. I was bummed about it, but this was my second chance.
I am so glad I got this second chance too, because this book was so good!
The beginning was a little shaky, because you were being thrown right in the middle of a battle scene without any real foreknowledge. Towards the end though, when you got the whole story, you could go back and put it into context.
Other than that though, this was a great book, and I can't wait to read the next! Just as a personal aside, I'm so glad the author put a boy into a flute section.

EXCERPT:
He’s looking down at me, making me feel small at five feet two inches. He has to be at least six feet tall. Broad shoulders. His suit today is gunmetal grey with blue or black pin striping—I can’t tell which. His shirt is a beautiful lavender color with a darker purple tie. "How do you know I'm not an addict?" I ask, softly. He smiles at me, warm, genuine. "Because, you've come to return the money I left you last night as a tip." My jaw falls open. "How"—I swallow hard—"did you know?" His smile fades a little. "Because, why else would you come down here?" I close my mouth and look down at the floor. His ability to read me is really scary. "Since you haven't eaten since last night, I'm going to take you to lunch." I feel my face flush bright red, both in anger and complete irritation. "That is not why I'm here. I've survived for my entire life fending for myself, I don't need some rich hot shot business mogul buying me food." I reach into the pocket of my bag and pull the folded up paper from it. I thrust it towards him. He refuses to take it. Tears of frustration trickle down my cheeks. "Damn it Mikah, take it." I push it at him again and again he refuses. "I'm not a damn charity case. I don't need your money or your food." The bell chimes. We’ve finally reached the skyway. As soon as the doors open, I drop the folded up paper with his money in it and bolt from the elevator, turning left, hoping and praying I can get away. "Vivienne, stop." I hear him say behind me. I keep going, walking quickly but not running. Yet. I'm trying hard to not make a scene. But he doesn’t seem to care about that. He catches me quickly, spins me around. I grab hold of his arm to catch my balance so I don't go sprawling onto the floor.

Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis: Introducing the God “Hearts” Me New Life Version Bible in a trendy new format designed just for you. This unique scripture version features a limited vocabulary of 850 words to simply and clearly share God’s truth—making it the perfect Bible version for your young heart. This brand-new edition of the New Life Version provides the complete Old and New Testaments in a beautiful, flexible format—perfect for when you’re on the go!

Review: I received an electronic copy of this book for review from Net Galley.

I found this version of the Bible to be a relatively easy read as I went through it. The age ranges for this are 10 and up, and with the pink cover and the title, it is intended for girls (or boys who may prefer the color pink, I am certainly not one to judge!) For my 7 year old, it was a little too heavy, but she did like the story of creation, as did my 4 year old. There are some portions of it that may be a little confusing, for instance when the subject of circumcision came up, it was just referred to as a piece of skin being cut away, I don't remember exactly if it was shown to be gender specific or if it was just "followers of God", or perhaps a 10 year old could not read that much into it.
Since it was an electronic copy of the Bible, it was kind of hard for me to really get a feel for it (pun not intended). Personally, I haven't gotten used to having an electronic Bible, I still need it physically.

REVIEW: Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead

Title: Gameboard of the Gods
Author: Richelle Mead
Series: Age of X #1
Publisher: Dutton Adult
Published Date: June 4, 2013
ISBN:  978-0525953685
Buy It Links: Amazon | Barnes and Noble
Rating: 2 1/2 stars

Synopsis: The first installment of Richelle Mead’s Age of X series has all the elements that have made her bestselling Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series such megasuccesses: sexy, irresistible characters; romantic and mythological intrigue; and relentless action and suspense.
In a futuristic world nearly destroyed by religious extremists, Justin March lives in exile after failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims. But Justin is given a second chance when Mae Koskinen comes to bring him back to the Republic of United North America (RUNA). Raised in an aristocratic caste, Mae is now a member of the military’s most elite and terrifying tier, a soldier with enhanced reflexes and skills.
When Justin and Mae are assigned to work together to solve a string of ritualistic murders, they soon realize that their discoveries have exposed them to terrible danger. As their investigation races forward, unknown enemies and powers greater than they can imagine are gathering in the shadows, ready to reclaim the world in which humans are merely game pieces on their board.

Review: I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly, I didn't like this book. It was very close to being a Did Not Finish book. This was the first of Richelle Mead's books that I've ever read, and I was hoping it would be like my experience with Julie Kagawa, where I completely fall in love with her books. Sadly, that didn't happen. I'm sure Richelle Mead fans all over are at their screens right now reading this review in disbelief.
I didn't really care for any of the characters. If Horatio and Magnus were supposed to be moral support, or comic relief, they failed utterly in both respects. I wanted to ignore Justin the entire time, and Mae was just plain aggravating. I found all of the characters except perhaps Tessa, to be very 2 dimensional, flat, and boring. The story line dragged on...and on...and on. I kept checking my Kindle to see how much more I had left of the book to finish.
The only real reason why I finished this book was because I felt compelled to. I made a promise to Net Galley, and I was going to complete it. I was very disappointed, and now I'm not sure if I will even try the author's other series.

Review: I received an electronic copy of this book through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I liked reading this book. It's one of those books that are broken down into sections, so that if a girl is experiencing a hard time in a specific area of her life, she can flip to that portion of the book, and there are Bible verses that are applicable to that problem.
I haven't read the entire Bible, and its been a long time since I've even opened one until recently, so some of the verses were a surprise to me, and I found applicable in my own life at this point.
I've heard that the physical book is small enough to put in a purse, and that would be helpful. It would have been nice to have an option to get this book in its physical form rather than an ebook.

BOOK BLAST: The Unholy by Paul DeBlassie III

The Unholy, a novel by Paul DeBlassie III, Ph.D.

Distributed by Ingram

(Sunstone Press)

"A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Set in the mystic land of Aztlan, the Unholy is a novel of destiny as healer and slayer. native lore of dreams and visions, shape changing, and natural magic work to spin a neo-gothic web in which sadness and mystery lure the unsuspecting into a twilight realm of discovery and decision."
Have you ever thought that something other than yourself has a hold of your mind? Meet Claire, a young curandera, in the mystic land of Aztlan who struggles to overcome the forces of evil and claim her inner inheritance.
The Unholy is a riveting novel about the dark side of religion, cultural prejudice throughout the Southwest, realms of mystic happenings, folk healers, native shamans, and signs from the spirit world. It is a psychological thriller, supernatural journey, and neo-gothic horror.
The Unholy lures the reader into a twilight realm that pits two old worlds against each other — the indigenous medicine ways versus institutional religion. Natural magic and the dark side of religion each play a role as healer confronts slayer.
“Paul DeBlassie III has brought us a richly imagined supernatural thriller set in the high mountain desert of Aztlan, where Claire Sanchez, an herbalist and medicine woman, has come to reclaim her healing heritage and uncover the secrets of her mother’s death. The book digs deep into legend, folklore, and the author’s own imagination to paint a stirring picture of a traditional curanderismo pitted against the oppressive forces of institutional religious power. Make sure you have lots of time; once you start reading this book, it will be hard to put down.”
-—Stephan V. Beyer, author of Singing to the Plants: A Guide to Mestizo Shamanism in the Upper Amazon
The Unholy, an excellent novel by Paul DeBlassie III, keeps the reader engaged throughout in mystery, suspense, and church politics. In addition to vividly depicting the beautiful landscape and culture of New Mexico, it exposes and strengthens the traditional work of the medicine women of the Southwest. I am looking forward to Dr. DeBlassie's next book.”
—Eliseo "Cheo” Torres, author of Curandero: A Life In Mexican Folk Healing, professor, and university administrator
